Why You Need to Unplug
Hustle culture makes us believe that resting is “wasting time.” But in reality, rest is the fuel that powers our focus, decision-making and emotional resilience. Without it, burnout is inevitable. So why do we feel guilty for unplugging? In this Notes from a Therapist, I’m unpacking the science behind rest and why embracing it is the smartest move you can make.
1. Rest Makes You More Productive (Yes, Really)
It sounds counterintuitive, but science backs this up: rested minds work better.
When you push yourself to exhaustion, your focus declines, creativity suffers and even simple tasks take longer. Studies show that taking short breaks throughout the day actually improves performance and prevents burnout.
Try this: Schedule mini-breaks like you would a meeting. A quick walk, 5 minutes of journaling in Mind Notes or even just deep breathing can reset your brain and boost efficiency.
2. Your Brain Needs Downtime to Process Information
Ever had a great idea in the shower or just before bed? That’s because your brain processes and organises information when you’re at rest.
When you’re always ‘on,’ your brain doesn’t have time to connect ideas, solve problems, or store new information. That’s why stepping away from work can actually help you work smarter.
Try this: Instead of forcing productivity when you feel drained, take 10 minutes to unplug. Write in your journal or pick a Mind Card to shift your mindset and refocus.
3. Rest Helps Regulate Stress & Prevent Burnout
Chronic stress keeps your nervous system in overdrive, leading to exhaustion, anxiety and even physical symptoms like headaches and muscle tension.
When you prioritise rest, your body can switch into recovery mode, lowering stress hormones, improving sleep, and boosting emotional resilience.
Try this: Switch off from technology at least thirty minutes before bed to unwind and train your mind to switch off properly, so you wake up refreshed, not exhausted.
4. Rest Is a Form of Self-Respect
You don’t have to ‘earn’ rest by exhausting yourself first. You deserve it because you’re human.
Imagine if you treated rest as fuel rather than a reward. How different would your energy, mood and mindset be?
Try this: Give yourself permission to rest today - without guilt. Think of three different ways that will work best for you, taking a bath, having a nap, changing into comfies, meditating, listening to an audiobook or doing nothing at all.
The Bottom Line:
Rest isn’t a luxury - it’s necessary for your wellbeing, focus and long-term success.
So, let’s flip the script: Instead of feeling guilty for resting, ask yourself - how can I rest better?
